A new series on the National Geographic channel "Ice Patrol " is due to start on Monday following the HMS Endurance's journey last season in Antarctica. You may remember from previous posts that my colleague Nikki was in Port Lockroy for the season looking after the visitors who came ashore to get their postcards stamped in the southernmost post office in the world, as well as the more important role of preserving the historic huts and checking the impact of visitors on the penguin population. During her time there she had the pleasure of meeting Captain Pritchard and some of his crew.
There are some great resources for schools on the Antarctic and the Arctic regions recommended by Alan Parkinson of the GA see the Geographical ning - a great place for information and resources.
One of the jobs that HMS Endurance undertakes is mapping the area, as it is constantly changing, in order to make up new charts for the number of ships now visiting the White Continent.
Of course, you could join our enterprising group of schools who have made a school visit to Antarctica. Contact study@discovertheworld.co.uk for more details. Or how about getting a group of colleagues together. Don't let the students have all the fun!
